Learning about Rhinos? Add this easy puppet craft to your lesson for a fun project for young kids!
This sliding-rhinoceros craft is a great activity to add to any lesson about rhinos, habitats, or the savannah. You can use it to show young kids what rhinos eat, (grass!) by sliding the rhino back and forth along the paper to make him “eat”!
You can also use this as a quiet project while watching a rhino documentary, or after reading a library book about rhinos.
This printable is totally free and easy to put together, in your homeschool or classroom.

This works best on cardstock paper, but you can use regular paper too.
You will need:
- Crayons
- Scissors
- A popsicle stick, tape/glue for the puppet handle (optional)
- x-acto knife and cutting mat.
Have the kids color in the grasslands scene and the rhino.
Then, cut out the rhino and the “handle” (or just the rhino if you are using a popcicle stick). If you are using a popsicle stick to make the rhino puppet, glue or tape it to the top of the stick now.
Then, use a craft knife or X-acto knife to cut across the dotted line on the grasslands scene. Make sure to do this on a cutting mat. You can also use scissors if you make a hole at the edge of the line with a hole punch, or fold the paper and make a snip to start your line.
Then, insert the handle/stick into the slit on the paper.
Now you can move the rhino puppet around the scene and pretend he is eating grass!
So easy! This is great for toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners.
We liked coloring this together, and hope you do too! Feel free to use this in your classroom or at home. Have fun!
